Wife of Joachim, Mother of Mary Grandmother of Jesus. Part of the Golden Thread, through Mary. Though not mentioned in the Old Testament (or the New), this amazing lady is too important not to be included in this collection. Anna lived within the traditions of the Old Covenant, yet her life and prayer made a way for the dawn of the New Covenant. According to tradition derived from apocryphal writings, Anna the mother of the Virgin Mary, was born in Bethlehem in Judaea c. 50-55 BC. This places her at the end of the Intertestamental Period, the 400 years between Malachi, the last Old Testament prophet, and the appearance of John the Baptist and Jesus. Anna and her husband shared a wealthy and devout life in Nazareth. Grieved by her barrenness, Anna promised God that she would dedicate her firstborn child to the Lord’s service. When their child, Mary, was three years old, in fulfilment of her promise, they brought her to the Temple in Jerusalem where they left her to be brought up.
